of how the Changes to IDEA, signed into law in December 2004,
will affect Students with Tourette Syndrome

The government relations activities of the Tourette Syndrome Association are designed to educate lawmakers and the public about the impact of legislation, regulatory actions, and public policy on the health and well being of people with Tourette Syndrome.  The organization's government relations efforts are led by an office in Washington staffed with a Director of Public Policy and a Government Relations Committee chaired by a national board member. TSA also takes action in this area as a member of several coalitions comprised largely of voluntary health and consumer organizations with similar concerns. A crucial part of the effort is the network of TSA chapter members who receive updates from the Government Relations Office and communicate directly with their elected officials. The issues that the organization monitors and voices views on include special education, health insurance, funding of health research, and prevention of genetic discrimination. Within the limits allowed by law, the organization advocates for or against specific pieces of legislation that would significantly affect people with Tourette Syndrome. The organization considers government actions at the national, state, and local levels, but limited resources mean that most effort is focused on national policy.
