2007 TSA Medical and Scientific Advisory
Board Annual Meetings

Comprised of world-class physicians and scientists, the TSA Medical and Scientific Advisory Boards, met in early February in Atlanta.

The Medical Advisory Board (MAB), which sets policy on all patient care issues, discussed establishing a new TSA consortium to focus on the development of new therapies and medications for treating TS.  The current status of the experimental  Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery on a small select subgroup of people with extremely severe TS symptoms was reviewed. Toward that end, the invited speaker for the joint dinner of TSA’s advisors was Dr. Mauro Porta, Milan Italy.  Dr. Porta gave a comprehensive talk about his team’s extensive experiences with the DBS procedure and TS patients.

The role of the TSA Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is to review applications to the TSA Research Program and to chart the course for TSA research initiatives.  For the 2007-2008 funding cycle, the SAB screened  86 investigator letters of intent to apply for funding.  These letters briefly outlined the scientific basis and relevance of the proposed project. Of these, 43 investigators were invited to submit full grant applications and from among those 17 research projects were recommended to and approved for funding by the TSA Board of Directors.
