Alternative/Complementary Therapies
for TS Symptoms
UPDATE: Click here to read TSA’s 12/09 Statement on Unsubstantiated Reports of Alternative Therapies for
Tourette Syndrome
TSA has always maintained a policy of encouraging a free exchange of information concerning research and treatment of Tourette Syndrome.
As with almost any chronic condition for which medications are imperfect, we are aware that there are some families with an interest in learning more about non-medication treatment regimens for the control of TS symptoms. It is important to note that, to date, there are no published studies, and therefore, no reliable data confirming the safety and/or efficacy of one or another of such treatments.
Having said that, there is a steady stream of single case reports describing a variety of environmental factors such as chemical additives in food or common allergens (dust, molds, and pollens) that seem to worsen TS symptoms in those individuals who may be vulnerable to such insults to their immune systems. TSA's national Medical Advisory Board members are interested in collecting these anecdotal reports.
