TSA has always maintained a policy of encouraging a free exchange of information concerning research and treatment of Tourette Syndrome.
As with almost any chronic condition for which medications are imperfect, we are aware that there are some families with an interest in learning more about non-medication treatment regimens for the control of TS symptoms. It is important to note that, to date, there are no published studies, and therefore, no reliable data confirming the safety and/or efficacy of one or another of such treatments.
Having said that, there is a steady stream of single case reports describing a variety of environmental factors such as chemical additives in food or common allergens (dust, molds, and pollens) that seem to worsen TS symptoms in those individuals who may be vulnerable to such insults to their immune systems. TSA's national Medical Advisory Board members are interested in collecting these anecdotal reports. For those interested in reading more about the occurrence of allergies in people with TS, we refer you to an article from TSA's Newsletter by Larry Scahill, MSN, MPH.
The Association for Comprehensive Neurotherapy (ACN) has a continuing interest in the topic of non-drug treatments for TS and other neurobiological conditions. This group regularly publishes a newsletter "Latitudes." While TSA is not formally affiliated with ACN, we have always referred those interested in alternative/complementary/integrative therapies to this network for further information.
